Requirements for Groupware Calendar Systems (GCS): Addressing Social Relationships
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper challenges the generic single conceptual viewpoint that designers have of groupware and specifically Groupware Calendar Systems (GCS). From the analysis of interviews, we categorized different calendar usage and activity that distinguish between the ‘Private Calendar’, the ‘Public Calendar’ and the ‘Shared Calendars’. Based on this categorization, we identified the dynamic relationship found in scheduling activity. The rationale stems from the growing use of web-based technology as integrated web programs that are facilitating new and different forms of collative team working. The purpose of this paper is to explore the weakness found in the ‘current’ GCS, ‘Deterministic’ position, further we go on to articulate the basis of an alternative approach, ‘Social Technological Teamwork’.

Your time and my time: a temporal approach to groupware calendar systems
Groupware calendar systems (GCS)—on-line, networked calendar software—are increasingly being used in large organizations. This paper presents a study of the use of GCS in organizations. It reviews major issues in the area, showing that current efforts lack attention to the temporal aspect, which seems to be at the center of a GCS. Sociotemporal order is a foundation of social organization, and ...
متن کاملGroupware Calendar Systems (GCS) Modelling in a Virtual Environment: Using Role Activity Diagram (RAD)
As technology moves away from the desktop to a world of loosely coupled devices, groupware applications are transforming communications by enabling new ways of processing and delivering work across time and space. This virtual environment becomes all pervasive, temporal coupling takes place over the web via communication technologies such as e-mail, videoconference and groupware calendar system...
متن کاملSocial, Individual & Technological Issues for Groupware Calendar Systems
1 This research was conducted while the author was at the Information & Computer Science Department, University of California, Irvine. ABSTRACT Designing and deploying groupware is difficult. Groupware evaluation and design are often approached from a single perspective, with a technologically-, individually-, or socially-centered focus. A study of Groupware Calendar Systems (GCSs) highlights t...
متن کاملAn evolutionary approach to groupware implementation: the context of requirements engineering in the socio-technical frame
Organizational implementation of new technology brings about design challenges as issues of requirements mismatch and evolving requirements emerge. For groupware systems, these issues are much more problematic as processes surrounding the performance of collaborative work are dynamic, unpredictable, hard to capture and difficult to specify in advance. Requirements for groupware systems are best...
متن کاملTowards a Method for Evolutionary Implementation of Groupware
Groupware is a typical example of an application domain in which requirements are hard to elicit and keep changing before, during, and after the introduction of the system. This calls for an evolutionary implementation approach. Several socio-technical models give an explanation of the interaction between the technical and the social system, i.e., the software and its organisational environment...
